Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time

Back by popular demand – yes, really! – Messiaen’s Quartet is one of the supreme masterpieces of the twentieth century.  Based on verses from Revelation and composed in a POW camp for the unusual combination of clarinet, violin, cello and piano, the Quartet was performed for the first time in Stalag 8-A on January 15, 1941.  In it, Messiaen mixes sounds like a painter mixes colors; incorporating bird-song, the horrors of wartime, visions of rainbows and angels, and the hope of better things to come.
